Don’t Starve Together (DST), seems pretty simple right? Well yes, that is the basis for the game, however, it is quite a bit more intuitive than that. A game all about survival by pretty much any means necessary that also allows you to approach the game in many different ways depending on your preference. It allows for the choice of multiple characters that have different strengths and weaknesses, some being stronger than others, however, it definitely comes down to playstyle on who you chose. This is the character you will use for the entirety of this server so choose wisely!
It’s been a little under a year since I was playing the game pretty regularly but I decided to give it a try once again and even got Snicker_Snaxx to join me. Snaxx having had very little experience with the game, I set out to show her the basics and it has given some interesting moments thus far.
The beginning of DST is usually the most boring but incredibly important since this is where you start your exploration to find where all the important resources and biomes are, such as beefalo, berries, forests, grasslands, twigs, and lastly the rock formations. Every single one of these holds important from food to tools, to fires to survive the night in the early game up until early base setup. A short note on the times of day in DST, there are three, day, dusk, and night. Day and dusk are very similar with there being slight differences in mob appearances as well as the overall look, however, the major change comes with the night. At night time it is completely dark and if the player lacks a light source (Torch, campfire, or fire pit) they will come under the attack of Charlie. Charlie is the main antagonist in the DST world and is not visible to the player due to the darkness. Surviving the attack of Charlie is possible if the player reacts quickly due to her 100 attack which can two-shot any character.
Another very important part of DST is the character you choose to play. Due to her strength in the early game as well as her explosive ability regarding farms, Wickerbottom was an obvious choice for me to use. Wickerbottom, your typical cranky librarian with a wealth of knowledge has the ability to craft certain items without the use of a science machine and thus makes her an insanely powerful early game character. Snaxx through much deliberation went with Wendy (the bereaved, due to the loss of her twin sister, Abigail), comes off as both cute and quite depressed. She’s a character I have little experience with due to her being pretty weak prior to her rework earlier this year. So for both of us, finding Wendy’s true strengths will come with time. Perhaps her true strength comes in Abigail. How does she play a role, once again we will have to wait and see.
An uneventful first couple of days, involved Snaxx having a small run-in with a beefalo (the fluffy bison-like animals which stop and stare at you as you go) which she intended to examine because she thought it was cute instead of hit as well as a close call with a Tallbird (as the description tells, a bird with unnaturally long legs and a large eye). Then came the discovery of the graveyard which saw Snaxx discovering a small ghost friend (Pipspooks) who took her on quite the confusing adventure searching for different objects that ended up giving mourning glories. The use of these mourning glories is not clear yet and something that still needs to be discovered, perhaps this is the link to Abigail?
Chester, a literal walking chest acquired through finding the eye bone near the ponds found throughout the map, and Glommer have both been found. Glommer requires a little more research and timing where he can only be acquired during a full moon in the birch biome close to Pig King. Glommer is best described as a little fluffy mutant bee-spider that follows his flower no matter if the player has it in their inventory or it is lying on the ground. Glommer also gives the player quite a large sanity regeneration when standing near him (adorable right?). Since both Chester and Glommer’s appearances the words “he’s adorable” and “he’s so cute” regarding what they do have been uttered pretty regularly from both of us, but mainly from Snaxx (for those of you that know her, this is something you will hear pretty often in any game).
Then came the first appearance of the mysterious hounds, announced by loud barking noises as well as the troubled questioning from the characters. Their sounds sending panic through the characters, clearly means that these hounds are not something to take with a pinch of salt and thus action must be taken. However, with only myself having experience with fighting in DST, while Snaxx’s experience is sucker-punching a beefalo on accident, how will we survive the attack of the hounds?
